WHAT'S THAT?

How Sweet it is...sugar

Sucralose. Maltodextrin. Aspartame.  What's the difference and is it even close to sugar?

Sugar: is an edible crystalline carbohydrate. The term sugar usually refers to sucrose, which is also called "table sugar" or "saccharose." Sugar can also be come in forms such as corn syrup, dextrose, crystalline fructose, and maltose. Other names and forms: lactose and fructose.

Stevia: a sub-tropical/tropical herb that is 300 times sweeter than sugar.  Has a low-glycemic index and can be grown on your patio!  Also called Rebiana and commercially known as Truvia. Too much interesting info to write here, want more?  Click here

THE BIG "O"
ORGANIZATION OVERHAUL 2012!

We are scouring the webosphere to bring you nifty organizing tips that make you happier, less stressed and, well, organized!  Check out this clever little contraption that will help you to never misplace your keys again!  We are totally going to do this!

Is this not the most clever thing you've ever seen?  We found this hinged clock pictured on Real Simple and fell in love with the idea!
We found a similar and inexpensive clock and snagged it for our store, of course!  Hit the "SHOP" tab to check it out.
The point of this is not what clock you have, but rather that you have something in place so that you can keep yourself - and everyone else in your house - organized.  How many times have you been running late, only to find that you now can't find your keys!?  Used to happen to me all the time!  I now attach my keys to my purse all the time, but that doesn't help me get the rest of my family organized.  Whatever you get, whether a basket, a storage clock, or a shelf, place it by the door you use to get to your car.
Stay tuned for our next tip next week!

Maltodextrin: naturally occurring sweetener derived from starch (wheat). Easily digestible and moderately sweet.

Xylitol: also classified with mannitol, sorbitol and erythritol.  Believe it or not, these are naturally occurring sugar alcohols.  Too much and you may be rushing to the potty...

Sucralose: artificial sweetener, non-caloric and the majority is not digested by the body.  Seemingly no health implications.  Also branded as Splenda.

Aspartame:absolute artificial sweetener, 200 times sweeter than sucrose. Much controversy and probably should be limited in its consumption.  Want more info?  Click Here

Exercise most days of the week

Check out the American Heart Association site for more detailed information and warning signs.

Feeling Restless?
I remember when I first saw the commercial for “RLS”.  What??? RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME?!?!  That’s it!  I’ve had this frustrating feeling in my leg since my teen years that made me feel like I needed to shake my leg or move it in some way, but only when it was time for me to sleep.  I often felt like my cat when she got tape stuck on her paw!  It was quite annoying and this commercial just gave it a name.

I have since found out that RLS is a neurological disorder that causes an uncontrollable urge to move your legs constantly, typically when you’re resting. It has been suggested that the cause may be due to a brain chemical (dopamine) imbalance or an iron deficiency.

Some things that may help: walk a lap around your house, regular exercise, increase your iron intake (discuss with your doc first).  My cheap and easy remedy: I take the leftover slivers of Irish Spring soap and put them in a baggie under my fitted bed sheet (by my calf or ankle).  No more shaky legs (trust me)!! My husband insists that this relief is all in my head…well it is a neurological disorder, right?
