Don't toss those Christmas cards just yet....someone else can use them (or even you)!  We have some cool ideas, courtesy of Planet Green, of course!  Click Here

Oh, it's that time again....election year!  Let us say right up front that B.A.B.E is apolitical - you choose who you want to vote for & we back no candidates, persuade you to vote for any certain person.  Unless, we suppose, that a candidate emerged who was fiscally responsible, environmentally responsible and made becoming a B.A.B.E mandatory.....oh, oops, sorry, we were daydreaming!

Our goal is to get you to become involved in the world in which you live, just a bit more.  We can all do a little something - write a letter, make different purchasing decisions, donate some money to a worthy cause.  Each of these things engage us in the world around us.  Here are some helpful links to get you on your way:

Why Meatless Monday? As B.A.B.Es, we're all about anything that makes us healthier and has a positive impact on our world.  The negative effect of our meat based society not only has health implications (high cholesterol, ever-increasing waist lines), but the negative effects on the planet are many as well- The water needs of livestock are tremendous, far above those of vegetables or grains. An estimated 1,800 to 2,500 gallons of water go into a single pound of beef. Soy tofu produced in California requires 220 gallons of water per pound.
Dr. Oz agrees: a more veggie based diet is THE healthiest diet to be on.   http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/vital-veggies-women-0

Palm Oil. Have you ever heard of it?  It’s in practically everything in your cupboard and many items in your medicine cabinet.  Palm Oil comes from the tropical palm tree and is used in many food stuffs as the vegetable oil and the same in beauty products.
Palm Oil comes in many forms: Palm oil, palm kernel oil, partially hydrogenated palm oil (my personal favorite - note the sarcasm), vitamin A palmitate and retinyl palmitate and others.
I'm sure you're wondering why I'm telling you all this.  Because, fellow B.A.B.Es, we are one month away from Earth Day and this is a perfect time to talk about the down side of Palm Oil.  To grow enough palm trees to harvest all the food oils that are in demand around the globe, great swaths of tropical rainforests are being cut down.  People are displaced, orangutans and other wildlife being killed and our great green medicine chest is being destroyed.  This is the downside of Palm Oil.
What can you do?  This is actually pretty easy: the easiest way to stop this destructive behavior is:
·Don’t buy Palm Oil.  Remember, you vote with your dollars!  You need to be a label reader to see what’s in your food and your personal care products.  In an effort for space, here are a couple of links for products that contain Palm Oil: Here and Here J

This question comes to us from Samantha in Reno, Nevada:

Q: Are whales still endangered?

A:  Although whales have made a comeback in recent years, many are still endangered.
The baiji, or Chinese River Dolphin, is extremely endangered.  It lives in the Yangtze River,  one of the world's most populated places, with 12% of the world's population living along it. Because of this, the dolphin is threatened. Their home has become polluted, overfished and overrun with boats, with many stretches of the river unaccessable to the dolphins due to damming of the waters.  Not all is bleak:  California gray whale, twice hunted to the brink of extinction during peak whaling
years. Legally protected since 1946, gray whales have made an astonishing comeback.
Gray whales currently number about 21,000, an estimate scientists believe matches the pre-whaling population. California gray whales were removed from the Endangered Species List in 1993.

What can you do?
As always, education is key.  Click HERE and HERE for resources to stay on top of whale conservation.

Don't be afraid to sign a petition or write to a company.  It's important to let your voice be heard!

If you live along a coastline or major river, please dispose of waste properly.  Trash easily makes its way into our waterways and ends up in oceans.  That's not good for our planet - or the animals that live in our world's oceans.
